Efficacy of a map on search, orientation and access behaviour in a hypermedia system

چکیده
Many researchers have proposed hypertext and hypermedia as superior learning environments over traditional linear-based approaches. At the same time, reports of disorientation amongst students working in these environments has become a topic of major concern. The study reported in this paper sets out to investigate the efficacy of the provision of maps on students' ability to search, orientation and access information in a hypertext-based learning task. The domain used required students to learn about the theory of tectonic plates. The results indicate that the greater use of maps led to less relevant searching behaviour and less effective search effort. In conclusion, it is argued that the concept of the spatial metaphor has not served the designers and students of hypertext and hypermedia environments well. Further, it is proposed that designers of non-linear learning environments would be better served by concentrating on the fundamental usability of their systems rather than attempting to introduce navigational aids, which themselves are a symptom of poor design. Analysis of 3D Passive Walking Including Turning Motions for the Finite-width Rimless Wheel
The focus of studies in the field of passive walking has often been on straight walking, while less attention has been paid to the field of turning motions. In this paper, the passive motions of a finite width rimless wheel as the simplest 3D model of passive biped walkers was investigated with a focus on turning motions. For this purpose, the hybrid model of the system consisting of continuous...
متن کاملCognitive style, hypermedia navigation and learning
This study examined the influence of cognitive style, spatial orientation and computer expertise on hypertext navigation patterns and learning outcomes when participants interacted with a hypermedia presentation. A sample of 306 undergraduates was pre-tested both on their cognitive style and on their selfreported frequency and ability in using computers. From the initial sample, 40 students wer...
متن کاملHybrid Adaptive Educational Hypermedia Recommender Accommodating User’s Learning Style and Web Page Features
Personalized recommenders have proved to be of use as a solution to reduce the information overload problem. Especially in Adaptive Hypermedia System, a recommender is the main module that delivers suitable learning objects to learners. Recommenders suffer from the cold-start and the sparsity problems. Furthermore, obtaining learner’s preferences is cumbersome. Most studies have only focused...

متن کاملAn Exploratory Study of Hypermedia Support for Problem Decomposition
Empirical hypermedia research has concentrated on usability rather than utility, and the research on utility has focused on information access as opposed to problem solving and decision making in organizations. This study, based on problem reduction theory, uses a hypermedia prototype system to support decision processes for solving a financial analysis problem. An exploratory laboratory experi...
